Within a rich composition of shimmering sunlight and soft shadows this beguiling lady-in-black seems, as one critic commented, 'poised between heartbeats.' So delicately rendered, so skillfully presented, 'Black Lace Nightgown' allows the viewer for one brief moment to share in her mystical solitude.

'This is not simply a painting of a woman,' Steve Hanks remarks. 'It is a painting of emotions.'

With Reflecting on Indian Beach Steve Hanks shows just why he is regarded as the best watercolor artist painting in America today. It is a definitive combination of beauty, emotion and environment. “There is a big difference between the beaches of the Northern Pacific Coast and those down in Southern California,” says Hanks. “The surf rolls in over long shallow flats. The waves pound and boil for great distances, creating in the air thick moisture. This subtly diffuses the light creating an atmosphere palatably different than that on the beaches farther south.”

What began in his mind as a relatively straight-forward painting took Hanks over a month to create. He became absorbed in building the large reflective areas of the tidal flats. It seems as if we can reach in ourselves and run our fingers through the cool, moist sand at this serene and magical place where tree-lined mountains slip beneath the surface of the sea.

While in downtown Santa Barbara, California, Steve Hanks happened upon a Halloween parade. “It really just fell into my lap,” he says. “It’s a great thing to paint. Children in costume have become a favorite subject of mine because they wear them with such comfort and pride. I love their innocent unselfconsciousness.”

What more compelling image than youthful dreams on a warm summer's day in a fairyland setting? We can only surmise what these two youngsters see reflected in the shimmering pool. The whole world lies before them in all its beauty, mystery and promise. Across the pool, at a distance in both space and time, stand intimations on their future. Gazing back toward the brother and sister are parents with their own small child, and an older couple who comprehend life's journey from a far different perspective. The artist, remembering this same boyhood experience, shares with us its deep universal meaning.

What is this image all about? Seven young children hold a long cut-out paper doll. Their ankles and wrists are tied together with colored ribbons. We are reminded that, regardless of our individual differences, we are all bound together by a common humanity. Closer inspection reveals a crying boy on the far left. His wrist ribbon has dropped off and he is momentarily disconnected from his peers. Our imagination assures us the blond girl will soon come to his assistance, he will be reunited and everthing will be okay.

This painting is Steve Hanks at his very best. It is both engaging and challenging. It is a sequel to two prints published in 1993, "All in a Row," and "All Gone Awry" which portray the same children when they were just babies. "Painting them again, six years later, has given me a chance to watch them grow," Steve Hanks comments.
