Description
"Stretching from sunny Southern California to the foggy forests of the North's 'Lost Coast' the renowened Pacific Coast Highway travels through a spectacular, diverse landscape, hundreds of years of human culture, and often, the lack there of, Here is the essence of my coast," says June Carey. "Californians hold to a special reverence for this coastline and it's highway. Having come here in my youth, I always marveled at the atmosphere of untamed wilderness, dispite the millions of visitors, each destine to 'get over to the water and enjoy some peace and quiet.' However, if you have ever, even for one winter, relied on any section of this road as a viable throughfare, you will know that invariably parts of it will rudely slither away into the hungry Pacific, leaving you to find an alternate route. Thus it maintains it's beauty and respect."

The Artist

June Carey

Born in Takoma, Maryland, June enjoyed many hours with her family visiting The Smithsonian and The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. In 1984 she began painting full-time. As a self-taught artist she says "I just learned everything the hard way."

June has recieved numerous awards for her California landscapes and coastal scenes, including the Arts for the Parks Region II Award in 1997 and 1998. Like many Californians, June started out on the East Coast. As a teenager, she came to California. In the 1980s Carey found herself painting desert scenes and became known for this, and participating in a lot of Western art shows and competitions. Then she met her husband David Thimgan, a historical Marine artist. The two began to enjoy frequent trips to the beautiful northern California coast together and before long June began painting vineyards as well as water.

"A large part of what drives me to paint is a passion to create a place I want to be. No place on earth is more inviting to me than the wine country of Northern California. The vineyards I paint become mine." - June Carey

June is a Fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists and an Artist Member of the Californian Art Club.
