In the south central part of Russia sandwiched between Siberia and Mongolia, is a vast mountainous area called the Altai. It was in this inhospitable region that a huge nature reserve of 3,335 square miles was created in 1932. Here the nomadic snow leopard has one of its few strongholds. But even with the protection it finds within this area, it is still very rare and endangered.
