Philippe Bertho - Focus

Philippe Bertho - Focus

“Every one of Berthos painting is a shining example of how life should be approached with optimism.” - William Zimmer, Art Critic for the New York Times

Within the creativity of Phillipe Berthos artwork is a sense of modern life. This image, Focus is a shining example. Surrounded by recurring circles and polka dots within circles, a man takes center stage in what looks like a game of air hokey either with himself or perhaps some imaginary figure. The table appears to be floating with it, struggling to maintain contact. Despite all of his obstacles, he learns over with great determination and focus.

Bubbles and circles are significant symbols in Bertho’s paintings. In this case, they are not only symbolic of the spinning pathways of the hockey puck, but they also represent the whirlwind that is everyday life and out struggle to concentrate and maintain calm amidst the hubbab of traffic, noise, maintaining careers and caring for children. Bertho claims to detest paintings these circles, but says he is compelled to include them in his works and accepts them like work and daily routine.
