A moonlit Parisian evening is extraordinarily enchanting. For those who have experienced the magic of a night in the “City of Lights,” Kondakova’s Paris Nocturne will bring the memory of it to life all over again. For those who have never had the opportunity to scroll a cobblestone Parisian street by lamplight or dine in a charming cafe after dark, Paris Nocturne will certainly take you there.
Set against a sky of brilliant cobalt blue and rose, Kondakova has chosen to depict several charming Parisian establishments in the Place du Tertre, the historic hilltop district of Montmartre. Outside Chez Eugene sit the empty cafe tables and chairs, a bit askew. At Chez Patachou just down the block, we are allowed a glimpse at a couple still enjoying a great meal and intimate conversation. Bicycles, a favorite mode of transportation for Parisians, have been carefully laid down against the tree-lined curb while the owners dine inside one of the eateries.
Making use of her mastery of color and light, Kondakova has painted the cafe awnings in the vivid tones of red, green and blue while setting them against the warm hues of the building. Adding to the effect is the use of lamplight to illuminate the cobbled sidewalk and building facades. The effect is pure romance and spirituality.
Exceptional captivating is the glitter of the Eiffel Tower set in the distance. Kondakova’s fabulous use of perspective is deliberate here, as she draws us down the charming street. There it appears – that bright twinkling gem in the middle of Paris. Seeing it in its glory, it is hard to believe that this renowned iron tower was once considered an atrocity and almost torn down in 1909. Saved by its antenna, which was used for telegraphy at the time, it fortunately is here to stay and for Kondakova to portray in her dazzling style.
