The Chateau Suite

The Forest of Fontainebleau is a place of remarkable beauty considered one of the most stunning and meticulously protected woodlands in Europe. Nestled in this forest sits Fontainebleau, perhaps France's most famous castle, having earned royal esteem as a base for the hunt. Fontainebleau is best known as Napoleon's retreat, a place of personal obsession for the diminutive emperor, spending lavishly to make it one of the nation's most opulent structures. The exterior of the building is delicately proportioned, not richly elaborate and overwhelming, making it easy to approach and enjoy. It is striking for its composite appearance: eight hundred years of architectural history can be read here. Its interior, however, humbles all other French castles, its construction begun by the flamboyant Renaissance Prince Francois I, who later, as king, hired Italian artists to embellish his chateau to his elaborate taste.
