John Seerey-Lester - Bitterroot Hope
For many, the beautiful and powerful grizzly bear symbolizes the essence of a wild and free North America. Yet today this native species is missing from all but a few of our public lands.
The National Wildlife Federation believes grizzlies should be restored to the Bitterroot Ecosystem, a rugged expanse of wildlands straddling the Idaho-Montana border. The largest wilderness area outside of Alaska, the Bitterroot was home to grizzlies until the 1930's when they were extirpated by uncontrolled hunting and predator control.
With luck, the grizzly will soon return to the Bitterroot. Along with other conservationists, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the forest industry and local citizens, the National Wildlife Federation has led a two-year effort to promote grizzly recovery while minimizing social and economic costs to local communities. Traditional opponents to grizzly reintroductions are now partners in this process, which may become a key success story for the beleaguered Endangered Species Act.
