Both the colorful atmosphere and casual sophistication of New Orlean's unique French Quarter are beautifully captured in this Steve Hanks' painting. The ragtag band has set up in the middle of the street, filling the air with its impromptu music. A young woman seemingly oblivious to their performance, strolls past engrossed in her own private concerns of the day. Idlers begin to congregate on the curbs, enjoying the free entertainment. Two French Quarter characters, one in black top hat, the other in white clown's face, pause for a moment to consider the scene. At the far end of this bustling street loom the tall buildings of modernity frowning, we imagine, on such street level exuberance. As often appears in Steve Hanks' exquisite images, subtle symbolism, some obvious, some nuanced, abounds in this richly detailed composition. Reflective observers may ponder the meaning of one way street signs. Others will note the older couple high on a balcony overlooking the confusion below. At this stage of their life they probably exist in a calmer, simpler place.
