Walt Disney Classics Collection - The Little Mermaid - Ursula at Vanity - Devilish Diva
The original Little Mermaid story by Hans Christian Andersen features and unnamed sea witch, but the creators of Disney’s animated retelling named the seagoing sorceress Ursula and conjured up one of Disney’s most popular villains. Though they knew Ursula should be some sort of oceanic creature, the animators did not decide on half-octopus until many undersea options were explored. Ursula’s octopus identity was cinched when a track of voice artist Pat Carroll’s vocal performance of Ursula was run along with live-action film of an actual octopus from a Disney nature documentary. Campy, creepy and comical, all at the same time, Ursula is a deliciously devious diva whose flamboyant evil is wickedly irresistible.
The vanity has never seemed so well named as when Ursula uncoils in front of the mirrored dressing table and puts on her game face. After all, she needs to enhance her slyly insincere smile before putting the squeeze on innocent Ariel. An appallingly crafty pro, this domineering do-badder seals her devious deals with as much ease as she applies her lipstick. But beware- though she claims she can make dreams come true, the dreams this deliciously decadent Sea Witch promises are actually nightmares. |
