Walt Disney Art Classics - Disney's Famous Felines
|
|
The Story Disney's greatest felines are featured in this limited edition sericel - including Figaro from Pinocchio (1940), Lucifer from Cinderella (1950), Dinah and the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland (1951), Si and Am from Lady and the Tramp (1955), Shere Kahn from The Jungle Book (1967), Oliver from Oliver and Co. (1988), Thomas O'Malley, Duchess, Toulouse, Berlioz, Marie, Scat Cat and his band from The Aristocats (1970), and Simba and Scar from The Lion King (1994).
The Artwork The Walt Disney Studios has created this character image using the fine art screen-printing process of color reproduction known as serigraphy. A total of 32 colors were then used to recreate the color image, each of which has been exactingly screen-printed, one color at a time, onto the acetate cel.
Few people make the connection that, along with Disney's world-renowned Mickey Mouse, Disney's first cartoon cat made his debut in Steamboat Willie (1928). Mickey's arch-nemesis originally know as Peg-Leg Pete (also known as Black Pete and just Pete) is, quite naturally, an aggressive cat.
Through the years, cats have been seen in Disney animation as heroes, villains and clowns. Figaro from Pinocchio (1940) was the cute and loyal pet of Geppetto. Thomas O'Malley, Duchess, Toulouse, Berlioz, and Marie were the heroes of The Aristocats (1970) and Sargent was the dalmatians' barnyard helper in 101 Dalmatians (1961). Simba came of age and became The Lion King (1994), and most recently, Kiara carried on the family's royal tradition in The Lion King II - Simba's Pride (1998).
This image depicts 24 cats. Most of the characters are easily recognizable from their starring or classic supporting roles. It is only the blue-vested cat that may be hard to recognize - it's the Genie from Aladdin (1992) transformed into a loveable feline form.
