Vadik Suljakov - Bar en Rouge

Vadik Suljakov - Bar en Rouge

Between 1852 and 1870, the city of Paris went through a major renovation. This renovation modernized the city bringing with it wider streets and unified architectural blocks. Its chief civic engineer Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann, accomplish much of this by tearing up many of the old, twisted streets and apartment houses, and replacing them with the wide, tree-lined boulevards and expansive gardens for which Paris is famous today.

In Suljakov's, Bar en Rouge, we are shown what Paris might have been like before Haussmann's modernization. The streets are narrow and winding. The buildings that line these streets are all uniquely gabled and show little signs of architectural unity. Up above a cold winter's moon contrasts beautifully with the warm tones of the street, and we are left to imagine ourselves strolling along the cobblestone steps, our footfalls echoing through the crisp night air.
