"California quail are favorites of mine. I admire their markings, their jaunty feathered top knots and their movements as they scurry around on the ground.

In the winter, quail are gregarious. In spring and summer, they become more solitary. Often a single male on top of a fence post or branch acts as guard and sentinel for the covey nearby.

I live where California quail are prevalent. I've seen hen and chicks race across the ground for quick cover - usually into a blackberry thicket. An unexpected flush on a hiking trail can get the heart pounding.

Although often seen on the ground, California quail will roost in trees. I once saw a male in one of our apple trees and knew that the 'orchard quail' would make an interesting painting subject." - Terry Isaac
