Stephen Lyman's vision for Thunderbolt was to allow the viewer to witness lightning’s beauty and power closer than anyone would ever dare in real life. In this magnificent image, the tree acts as a lightning rod. As the current travels through the tree's tissue, moisture instantly turns to steam and the result is an impressive explosion. "Lightning is terrifically challenging to paint," Stephen Lyman said. "I've seen this phenomenon from a distance while backpacking, but to actually capture it took a lot of research and imagination."
