"I have never thought that art should be pretty and comfortable. For most living things, life is tough and relatively short. On balance, however, life is absorbing and exciting and well worth the effort. In this picture, I wanted to show one of the more miserable moments in the day of an osprey. This is a painting in the tradition of the great Japanese woodblock artist, Hokusai, who showed life in all its aspects." - Robert Bateman
