| "It is a never-ending thrill to live in bald eagle country. Although we do not see them every day, we can expect a passing visit at any time. There may be a soaring silhouette crossing my studio skylight or, if we are lucky, an eagle may perch on one of the dead snags overlooking the sea a few yards away. We never tire of the honorable visitor and always dash to the window for a view. The greatest thrill is to be lucky enough to see the approach. The soaring changes to a heavy, flapping beat. This is a big and heavy bird. Whether it is landing on a perch or swooping to catch a fish, there is serious momentum. Many fine adjustments of wing and tail and legs are needed to accomplish the action with accuracy and grace. At the last moment, the legs and feet come down like landing gear on an aircraft.
