The grounds or fields of Bertho’s painting are radically different stuff from his figures and he reviews the standard opposition of figure and ground in a dynamic way. If the figures have their origin in a beloved American realist style, the fields of confounded space that they play and are reinvigorated surrealism. Bertho’s method is easy, he employs shadows to produce the third dimension but the implications are literally boggling. Modern science alerts us to a universe full of black holes. By decorating those holes Bertho achieves a universe that is even more paradoxical.
