Liudmila Kondakova - Hotel Rialto
Liudmila Kondakova shows her love of ancient and beautiful places with her stunning view of the Hotel Rialto. The hotel, which actually exists at the foot of the Rialto Bridge, on the banks of the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, sits at the heart of this fabled city. Kondakova paints it at night, lit up as if for a grand party - a romantic setting in this most romantic of cities. The Grand Canal has always been Venice's status address, and for centuries, the aristocracy have built marvelous marble places along it's looping banks, where the front doors look out onto the water and the gondola posts line the walkways like footman waiting to escort you inside. The many windows, with their varied arches displaying Byzantine, Gothic, and Venetian influences, offer a tantalizing hint at the festivities going on inside.
Kondakova once again displays her masterful use of color and light, as she sets the striking red hue of the Hotel against the nighttime sky; the dramatic lighting accentuates the intricate architectural details and every shade of brick in these grand residences. With the landmark presence of the Duomo towering over the skyline, it's hard to say if one should be on the Hotel side of the canal, dining in elegant luxury with friends, or on the opposite side, where you can see the Hotel Rialto in all it's glory.
