The Chateau Suite

Chenonceaux, surrounded by the water channels that flow throughout the Loire valley, stands as one of the most striking architectural wonders of its day. Created in 1514, the castle was a royal treasure passed from hand to hand, put to use alternately as a fortress in war, a palatial royal residence, and a retreat of kings during the royal hunt. Of its distinct history, it is said that Catherine de' Medici, mother of Mary Stuart, had the castle recreated in her image, her most notorious alteration being the castle's bridge that she has built to meticulous specification to span the River Cher. This same bridge she later chose as the place to reconcile her sons to her throne by presenting a feast which shocked her nation - she had her sons alternately served by one hundred naked women, chosen for their beauty, the banquet ending as a bacchanal, with over 1,000 torches strategically lit along the riverbanks to illuminate the chateau and its gardens.
