Kerry Hallam - Cinqueterre

Kerry Hallam - Cinqueterre

Along wild stretch of the northwest coast of Italy, just at the top of the “boot,” the Cinqueterre (Five Lands) beckon those travelers determined enough to get there. Suspended in time, pure and uncluttered by the commercial icons of contemporary life, the five towns of Riomaggiore, Mararola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso rise precipitously from steep rugged coastline, perched between the craggy mountains above and the crashing sea below.

Kerry Hallam, master Impressionist, visits the Italian side of the Mediterranean and takes a brief respite from the glamorous Riviera lifestyle, taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh seafood risotto, crisp local white wine, and an invigorating hike through the trail that connects these five towns. His brush strokes and palette capture the very essence of this place, where dwellings cling to the rocky slope and every bit of living space, like this patio cafe, is held back from falling into the sea by retaining walls that are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old.

People are drawn to the Cinqueterre not for grand hotels and nightlife but for its rugged, natural beauty. The Contrast of smooth and rough, land and sea, and the grounding effect of the vibrant, earthy colors combine to make an unforgettable portrait of a place known for its natural and timeless beauty.

Cinqueterre is pronounced Chink-way-terray, meaning Five Lands, which refers to the five towns along the coast of the Ligurian Sea.

Until the arrival of the railway which connects these towns, arriving by foot or by boat was the only way to visit the Cinqueterre.

Kerry Hallam skillfully paints magical combinations of earth, sky, and sea, very often in a Mediterranean setting.
