James Christensen - The Widow's Mite

James Christensen - The Widow's Mite

He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury and He saw a poor widow put in two copper coins and He said, 'Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for they contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living she had.' - The New Testament, Luke 21:1-4

"The story of 'The Widow's Mite' has long been one of my favorite moral tales," says James C. Christensen. "I pictured this widow as young. Suppose she had children. If so, her gift is greater still. She does not consider how large or small her gift is; she merely gives what she has. I wanted to portray that purity of thought and action. The widow, though raggedly clothed, glows with an inner light. The point here is not the money, it's what we are willing to give of ourselves."
