Greg Olsen - Fall Leaves

Greg Olsen - Fall Leaves

Fall Leaves was formerly known as One Man's Trash is Another Man’s Treasure. In honor of a dear family friend of Greg Olsen's; image is being brought out of the archives to be published.

This painting depicts four children playing in a pile of leaves while a neighbor in the background is burning his. To the children, the pile of leaves represents fun. To the neighbor, the leaves represent work and waste.

This little girl on the left is Greg Olsen's daughter, Heather, now 19. The boy with the basket of leaves is his son, Nate, who is now 21. The boy in the tree and the boy half-buried in the leaves on the right are actually the same boy used twice. He is a long-time friend and neighbor, John Fletcher.

On Sunday, July 21, 2006, U.S. Army Specialists 4th Class John Fletcher and Jordan Haynes were involved in an automobile accident. John suffered crippling injuries in the accident that took Jordan’s life. John had completed Infantry and Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia in 2005 and was assigned to the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), JFKSWC at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. John was to begin Phase III of Special Forces training the following day.

John is currently paralyzed from the waist down, T-8, and is in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, California, undergoing extensive physical therapy.

A fund has been established to help John and his family with the substantial challenges that lie ahead. A portion of the sale of each of these prints will be donated to this trust fund.

Thank you for helping us to say thank you to a young man who, from the young age, seemed to be destine to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Airborne. (John was, of course, the young boy jumping out of the tree.)

We hope this effort will play some part in carrying out the message of this painting, which is, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."
