Charles Peterson - Setting The Royals

The Maritime Collection

Built in 1868 for the China tea trade, the Cutty Sark, like her sister ships, was designed for speed. Under her elegant finish, she was one of the most powerful sailing ships ever launched. If conditions required it, the Cutty Shark could carry an amazing 32,000 square feet of canvas to drive her 1.3 million pounds of cargo.

Charles L. Peterson's "Setting The Royals" features the Cutty Sark in her element -- the tradewinds. Her captain, seeking to perfectly tune his ship to the weather conditions, has called for the royals to be set. We can see men at their work on the foot ropes of the main royal yard some 130 feet above the heaving deck -- no place for the weak of heart.
