Alan M. Hunt - Beauty and the Beast

In 'Beauty and the Beast' two adult lions stride side by side across the plain. Lions live in a precarious balance, directly related to the stability of their social unit and the wealth of food in their territory. The basic social structure, the pride, can have as many as three adult males. The males help protect the females from attack and from competitors who attempt to steal their food.

The males and females spend most of their time in same sex groups within the pride. The female lions remain in the same pride all thier lives. At the age of two years, young males are ousted from their pride and form a group with other young male lions. As they mature they will vie with the males from established prides. In the process the older males are pushed out and the diversity of the gene pool is protected.
