"In hilly country, slopes that face south can be inhospitable in the heat of summer," the artist comments. "However, in cold weather deer and other animals often seek them out for the life saving warmth they can provide. In my mind's eye, the strong afternoon sun on the buck's face and antlers against the rich darkness of the cedars was the genesis of this painting with its variety of textures in the rocks, mosses and tree trunks."
